You can't beat the view, or the service or the food. In fact, the one "complaint" I have is that there was too much of it - we couldn't finish all the meal and felt a bit guilty about that but we gave it a good try.
We like to stay every holiday one time at this beautiful place. Nice and gentle service and good prepared food.

Voici 3 ans que nous revenons chaque été à Matala, et Scala est un passage obligé! La cuisine est succulente et raffinée, le service est parfait et la vue est incroyable! Nous adorons Scala et son équipe, il nous tarde déjà de revenir l'été prochain! 💙

Nothing to complain about here. Good location, great staff, good food, all good. However (I'm not now complaining, these are my observations from a personal opinion, we really had a nice time.), as I'd been led to believe Scala was amazing and fabulous, I was a little underwhelmed to be honest. We live around London so are used to high prices on evenings out, so paying around 50% more over those prices for this meal wasn't a huge surprise considering location, but for the price I would like to eat great food. Again, there was nothing wrong at all with the food, but it was good, not great (Maybe you think I'm being picky? I'm simply comparing to other levels of food I've had at this price point). Also (maybe, this time, I am being a little picky. Sorry.), the view was nice, but not as great as I expected. I guess if I hadn't read reviews and gone with such high expectations then I wouldn't be sounding disappointed (with everything!). My expectations (maybe unfairly) were sky high, so its fair to say I was underwhelmed. Maybe it was the location of our table? Who knows. We were there for sunset but didn't actually get to see the sunset. We saw the bay and the caves in the cliffs (which is all beautiful) change colour as the sun set, bit the sun itself was off behind the cliffs somewhere.
All of the staff, every single one we spoke with (5 overall) were great. Polite and helpful with what felt like a very quick and efficient service. Top class work, 6 stars for this.
Just a little note on access. To get up to the restaurant and its various rooms you need to ascend a steep stair with some large steps (maybe there is another access somewhere we didn't see, so maybe ask beforehand if this is an issue for you). It isn't particularly long, only 5 metres or so, but for some this may be something you need to know.
Matala itself is fabulous, so its a great walk to and from the restaurant, a beautiful little village and beach with the caves an added bonus.

I repeat my first sentiment, Scala is a decent place to eat and we had no complaints, thank you.

We booked a table under the recommendation of a friend and it is a restaurant not to be missed! Great friendly service and food that combines Greek ingredients with a twist! As for the location you have a clear view of the famous caves.

This was one of the highlights of our journey in Crete. What a nice place to stay. Great view an atmosphere. Pure taste an nice plates. Friendly people. This was Matala at its best. Keep on doing this.
Perched high above the bay of Matala, on the opposite side of the famous caves, this restaurant offers one of the most breathtaking views in town—especially if you manage to get a table on the small balcony. The service is outstanding, with staff who are genuinely warm, attentive, and welcoming. The food is exceptional: fresh seafood, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavour. The standout is the Scala Combo—a generous platter for two (easily enough for three) that showcases a wide selection of the restaurant’s specialties. Prices are fair for the quality, making it not just a place you should try, but one you’ll definitely want to return to.

In 2024 zijn wij daar geweest en dit jaar 2 keer in een week. De rauwe vis carpaccio is super lekker!! De bediening is zeer goed, en het geweldige uitzicht over de zee en het dorp. Wij zouden hier elke dag kunnen eten♥️! ( foto’s op Google Maps)

Comimos en la terraza de la planta alta. Vistas maravillosas a la playa de Matala. La comida estaba muy rica (pescado, pulpo, langostinos, sashimi, ensalada) y el camarero nos atendió muy bien. Sitio recomendable. Nosotros reservamos por internet, pero creo que no habría hecho falta, no se llenó, en julio.

I've now had the good fortune to eat at Scala several times. It's hard to find the words to describe how well looked after you will feel after a meal at Scala. Manos & team are always so accomodating, so thoughtful, you'll wish every restaurant looked after its patrons this well.
And then there's the food. Really some of the best food I have ever eaten. From the fresh fish, hand delivered to the restaurant, to the local cretan delicacies, you cannot go wrong. A word to the wise. Always ask what specials are available!
And finally the restaurant itself.. perched above Matala with a view of the beach and that iconic rock, slanting into the sea. You won't want to leave, I certainly didn't.

It was our second meal in Scala restaurant as we went there last year.
As we were in Matala last week, we were very pleased to come back and have lunch in Scala restaurant as all is pefect : quality of food, warmly service, view on Matala bay... As for us it is one of the best restaurant in Crete...near of One star in Michelin French Guide (we are French...).
So we will be pleased to come back again uf we return to Matala.

Scala is a great address in Matala, the sea food was excellent, desserts are really yummy (try the Scala Illusion!), the vibe is very nice and the view on the village, caves and sea.
Bill is more expensive than the average restaurant in Crete but definitely worth it.

Scala is an upscale place with wonderful, Greek inspired food with a twist. It is unique in Matala, that's for sure. The location is great providing a wonderful view of the town and the famous caves.

I ate mushroom burger with fried salmon halloumi and pickle cream it was incredible
the dessert with the cannabis oil and the spicy crisp I still dream of it at night
And the little shot of vodka and lemon at the end was very sweet and good too
Everybody was so nice (like everywhere in Crete) and the place is located in a very beautiful place : in front of the matala beach with these tiny houses inside the rocks
